HUNTER

I was up early, and went out for a run, and then after, a shower, I headed out again, to get some groceries. I had to keep myself busy off-season when the kids weren’t with me - it was the best way not to sink into a funk about not being able to see them every day. I had a Zoom meeting with my agent Vince, rather than going across town to his office. Then, over some lunch – turkey and salad on rye with a scrape of mayo, as approved by Rex - I finally started to let my mind wander. And, of course, it wandered straight to Elle. My thoughts roamed over the subjects of her body, how wild she drove me, and how attractive her sexual confidence was, especially coupled with her playfulness and vulnerability at times. I felt like she showed that vulnerability only to me, when the bedroom door was closed, and I loved it.

It had been like that last night, once we were finally curled up together in the big sleigh bed, about four in the morning, completely spent, with not a word or a touch or a kiss left in us – well, for a few hours anyway. All we could do was hold one another close, and in that moment, her back pressed against my body, she’d breathed in deep and then let out a huge sigh, which turned into a shudder, and then into heavy sobs from deep within. It was just for a few seconds, and there was nothing to say, nothing to do – I just knew that. I’d held her tight, and loved her with every cell of my being, and she’d let me. And then she’d quietened down, and her breathing had dropped into a regular rhythm, and I’d matched mine to it, and we’d fallen fast asleep.

Suddenly I wanted to see her, and be with her, even if we were just talking – talking and laughing about how much fun the pancakes and the playground had been. She’d been so amazing with my kids. She’d make a brilliant mom one day…

That thought scrambled my brain in about seven different ways all at once. Did she even want kids? We’d never really talked about it when we’d been together. And now that… maybe… we would be together, would she want them? Did I want any more? I had a flash of an image of an older, but no less glitter-covered Margie sitting here at the table, with Ty at about six years old. I saw him biting into a huge turkey sandwich just like mine, in a Yankees Little League uniform. He was swinging his legs and ‘accidentally’ kicking his sister under the table, while Elle pulled drinks from the refrigerator, a smiling baby balanced on her hip, and pregnant with another. I squeezed my eyes shut, but the image didn’t go away.

“Holy fucking shit, Hunter, you’d had one date,” I said to myself, out loud, and
